Housing of the Present
Renting & Ownership
The 54 lots in the blocks directly east of Washington Park are made up of houses that are both owned and rented. Since the majority of houses were converted into duplexes, it is very easy for families to rent either the lower or upper level of the house from its owner.
The prices of the lots range from around $60,000 to $120,000, with individual families paying anywhere between $600 and $900 in rent each month for units that may have between three and seven bedrooms. This shows that the duplexes are truly made for growing families. These multi-family homes are also residences for households with extended families. Since the 1950s, the percentage difference between homeowners and renters in Washington Park has continued to grow farther apart. In the 1960s, the difference was around 20%. Today, the gap is closer to 50%, with the majority of the residents renting. |
