NEIGHBORHOOD ASSETS
Industrial Spaces
Located on W. Walnut Street near N. 31st Street in Walnut Hill lies the Barrel Plating Services, Inc. warehouse. Aside from this warehouse, the surrounding area is residential, making this building stick out. The warehouse could serve as a potential asset for the community, although there are plenty of pros and cons regarding its presence that should be weighed.
Manufacturing companies in general can be beneficial to communities in several ways. They can provide skilled jobs to members of the community, with wages that allow workers to support families. With the money earned, employees can help support other community businesses, which will then continue to further help the community as a whole. Manufacturing companies bring traffic through the community, including businessmen, truckers, and salesmen who are all likely to spend money in neighborhood stores while they are in town. A profitable manufacturing company also has the potential to be able to donate money to local community revitalization efforts in order to help the community in which its workers live. Although there are positives to having a manufacturing company in a neighborhood, there are also some potential negatives. Manufacturing companies can be loud and disruptive to nearby residents. Manufacturing can also bring in heavy traffic from semi-trucks and flatbed trucks, which pollute the neighborhood and create more dangerous streets for everybody, especially children who live in the area. This traffic and pollution would also cause nearby parks and community gardens to suffer; less people would occupy the areas, and they would become desolate. Another negative to having the manufacturing company in the area has to do with the aesthetics of the building itself. In the specific case of the Barrel Plating Services, Inc. warehouse, the building has very few windows; most of the previously existing windows have either been filled in with bricks or boarded up, giving this manufacturing company a look of abandonment, even though it is still active. Ultimately, the Barrel Plating Services, Inc. warehouse, and any manufacturing company, for that matter, has some potential to be a valuable asset; however, showing the building's potential requires a lot of work and community cooperation. |
