NEIGHBORHOOD ASSETS
Large Buildings with Sizable Parking
Large buildings with sizable parking areas are valuable assets for the Washington Park neighborhood. There are several vacant buildings that match these parameters throughout the neighborhood, ranging from schools or churches to industrial buildings.
All of the buildings that fall into this category of development can be found along the eastern boundary of the Washington Park neighborhood, near the railroad corridor. One possibility as to why the buildings are placed where they are is that Milwaukee was considered an "industrial city" in the mid-1900s, and these large buildings would have most likely been used for manufacturing purposes. These vacant buildings could serve well being repurposed as mixed-use developments that would create activity all throughout the day. This level of activity promotes safety in neighborhoods by attracting more people, putting more "eyes on the street." These lots also have ample space for commuter parking, which can also help bring more people to the neighborhood. |
